CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL

Most publicly marked by the July 16 annual feast, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel was founded in 1884 and is one of the oldest churches in NYC. For more than a century worshipers have come to follow the icon of the saint, Lady of Mt. Carmel, through the streets of Harlem during the feast-time procession. In the 1930's, tens of thousands of worshippers would converge on the area to carry candles and walk the streets. A symbol of Italian Harlem's cultural history, the church is now also attended by the many Dominican and Haitian inhabitants of the community.
