STATEMENT

The NYCL Machine is designed to interweave the historic and human fabrics of New York City by marking more than 400 sites of historical importance throughout the five boroughs.

Places of cultural and historical importance will be marked with an iconic example of street furniture that distributes an educational, collectible, and postage-ready card that showcases the history of the site and includes a map of other near-by sites to create a web of historically significant stories about New York.

The NYCL card informs you of the significance of the site and its history within the neighborhood, allows you to share site history and your visit with others when you use it as a post card, maps out other nearby sites and invites you to visit them. It also encourages collection of other cards with a time and date stamp, links you to the Place Matters website where you may find additional information and sites, and intimately integrates you into the cultural and historical heritage of New York City.

HOW IT WORKS

The NYCL Machine dispenses a time- and date-stamped collector's card that illuminates the importance of historical locations, creates a dialogue between sites and visitors, imports a sense of neighborhood by conveying site significance, and disseminates information. It also encourages visitors to seek out these sites to learn more about them and share the information with others.

The City Lore card is a pass to New York's historical sites and is a tangible reminder of your interaction with history.
